Is teak wood easy to restore on your own?
I don’t have a whole lot of it on my boat but what is there is greyish and old looking. What are the steps to restoring it and should I tackle it myself?
yes. sandpaper is your friend. You can keep the golden look with teak oil. If you decide to varnish it, it will need to be sanded and varnished every year.
you may also decide to keep the bare teak. If this is on your deck. I highly recommend leaving the teak bare. Teak offers grip, even when its wet. If its your cabin sole, I also recommend keeping it bare. If you varnish decking, and it gets wet, you need three hands and a tail to hold on.
Trim work, you can varnish. After sanding, you want to wipe it with MEK or Acetone to get rid of the surface oil. Teak is naturally oily.
Its a lot of work. Not difficult to do, just a lot of work.
