Yacht Fiberglass question !?

Hey I have an old yacht that has a bit of a damaged hull its 30 feet long and i was wondering instead of repalcing the mahogany wood on the Hull would it be possible to just put a brand new fiberglass hull over the wood and not have to replace the wood???

Yes, but you need to do your homework regarding how well anything will adhere to mahogany. I recall it being a pretty oily wood.

One error I saw here is that folks are talking about epoxy. If you’re going to glass over a hull (I have owned a 42-foot commercial fishing boat that was like that), you use Polyester resin. It will still cost you a lot of money, but it will cost you only 15-20% of what epoxy will cost.

The careful application of the correct type of glass cloth will determine the strength of the final composite. There isn’t much truth to the fact that the strength of the final product will be determined purely by the strength of the wood underneath- this is why balsa wood is used as a core material. Just like the fact that your limbs are far more resilient, strong and durable than the bones underneath, composites are strong based on the makeup of the layers of the material involved.

You need to have a professional teach you how to lay-up a hull for glassing-over. It’s an art and a science, but not terribly difficult to learn. If you use a layer of matting, a layer of woven roving, and a layer of matting over that, with bi- or tri-axial matting at the stress points (keel, garboard strake, turn of the bilge, cutwater, skeg, and the area around the Cutless bearing or equivalen, you’ll do well. The only other thing to consider is that you can NOT have air pockets between the glass and the hull. You’ll have to make up a putty to fill in any gaps.
