First off pack a lot of lunch’s. You might try pressure washing all the wood first just to save time. Then, I hear good things about some eco friendly paint stripper. Leave it on for 1/2 hr or whatever the container said use a putty knife then on to sanding. Just make sure to wear a resporator. If the wood was around in the good old days then it is full of lead. You will probobly need to get a permit so the Gov. makes sure you dispose of the debres (paint) properly. As far as the repair, some 1 x 6 cedar stock should do the trick (replace the bad stuff).
