Refinishing my old hard wood floor?

Is it ok to vinish my old hard wood floor after I have sanded it and cleaned the floor but it is still a little ruff and not real smooth. or should it be some what ruff, or very smooth?

It should be reasonably smooth before you put the polyurethane on it. However, the poly will smooth it out as you build coats. Apply your first coat, then when it’s dry scuff lightly with 000 steel wool. Clean up the dust and apply a second coat. Repeat the scuff, then apply a third coat. Your floor should be smooth, and it will last for a long time. Hope this helps.
