I’m trying to fix up my place a little bit. It has wood floors and off white walls?

I have a beat up old dark brown leather sofa and an antique armoire kinda thing in the family room with a trunk coffee table. Do I need an area rug under the trunk? What colors should it be? My whole place has almost no color other than the brown sofa. All the furniture is dark reddish (cherry?) wood. Even the kitchen is all white except the floors. I want to make my place look better without my girlfriend’s help so i can impress her a little bit. Any ideas? I don’t have any pictures on the walls either. Good places to buy nice looking stuff that won’t clash with what I already have. The furniture is all passed down antiques from my grandparents, so I guess it needs to look ok with that stuff?

It so depends on your style and your girlfriend’s style but your basic furniture sounds like it can go two totally different ways. You could make the room really elegant with architectural pieces and mirrors on the walls and candles and statues on the tables. Buy a palm tree and put it in a decorative basket and put a can light behind it and the reflections on the wall are beautiful. If you have a Home Goods/TJ Maxx in your area these things are very well priced there. Also the Bombay stores in the malls are good for this. A deep colored rug in reds and blacks and beiges would go great in there (check out overstock.com for good prices on real wool rugs). The other way to go is really funky which can look good with things like beat up leather. Put a vintage rug on the wall with tack strips (any hardware) or frame cool album covers. Use wood bead curtains(try ebay) in geometric designs to separate rooms without doors. Go to thrift stores and Goodwills and find retro looking stuff in offbeat colors like orange. If you can find the right stuff it looks young without looking dorm-ish. Whichever style you use go with plants, hang a hook in the ceiling and get a full hanging plant (put it in a basket-don’t leave the plastic!) and put some small plants on tables…they always look impressive. The kitchen is hard without knowing more but if you aren’t going to paint pick a color you really like and go with it. Find a big glass plate in that color and hang it on the wall. If you have room to put things on your cabinets buy inexpensive glass things like vases and pitchers and big bowls in different sizes and shades of your color (Christmas tree Shop?) and line them up along the top. Wine bottles (if you drink wine) also come with the coolest labels and if they are put out right they look terrific ….get some dried berry decorations and put them around the bottles. Good luck and hope something here will work for your girlfriend but don’t forget to tell her it was your brilliant idea!!!!
