How can I tell the difference between a waxed wood and varnished/polyurethane wood?

I have a dining room table that is in desperate need of some refinishing. My mom bought it for me at an estate auction a few years ago and I am assuming its fairly old ( probably about 50 years or so). Anyway. I don’t know if it has a wax finish or a varnish on it and I don’t know how to tell.
Anybody know?

Put a drop of water on the floor and leave it for 24hrs.
If the surface under the drop turns white you know the floor has been waxed.
