I’m hanging a replacement solid wood door. What is the best way to trim it to the size of the doorway?
I think my old wood plane may be shot, and after thirty minutes of getting no where with my weak wal-mart orbital sander I ave decided to get a new tool.
Would something like a “Bosch FINECUT Flush Cut Power Hand Saw” be to sloppy for the job? It looks cool cause I could use it for other things. Or should I just get a belt sander that I’m afraid wouldn’t be as versatile for other jobs but would get this one done?
Thanks for your help!
Mike
Hi….
Depends on how much you want to take off. I find a relatively inexpensive power hand planer with carbide blades ( I use a skill model) is often the best way to go if you are only talking 1/4″ or so. Otherwise, the tool to use us a skill saw with a fine cut carbide blade. (40T or more), then use the planer for fine tuning the cut to scribe. As mentioned, you want a slight angel at the hinge side to prevent ‘hinge binding’. An 1/8″ is usually sufficient. If you are talking a tool for just a height cut, just about anything will do as long as you take the precaution of avoiding ‘chip-out’ damgage, as mentioned by others.

Diamond Tool $90.81 A diamond tool is a cutting tool with diamond grains fixed on the valid working parts of the tool via some kinds of bond materials or by some other special means. Diamonds should not be used for cutting steel or iron, as carbon will dissolve into the workpiece and lead to tool wear and work hardening. Three other materials are used for cutting steels where diamond would be used: Cubic boron nitride (cBN, the second hardest material known), aluminum oxide, and silicon nitride tooling may be used. For metalbonded diamond tools, the bond is one of the prime factors when selecting which tool to use for cutting or grinding a specific material depending on how hard, or abrasive, the material is. The bond is what decides the rate at which the metallic powders wear down and expose new diamond crystals at the surface to maintain what would be considered a sharp edge. For example, when sawing hard materials, a diamond blade with a soft bond would be needed. This means the metallic powders in the segments (teeth) of the diamond blade wear fast enough to release old, dull crystals, exposing new diamond at the edges to continue cutting efficiently.
