How do you repair heavily damaged 100+ yearold plaster directly on brick walls?
I’ve heard of using acid.. but the floors are wood. I need to do this myself, so I can’t hire anyone. I’ve tried chipping away at it with a chisel and hammer, and was able to remove some large chunks.. but most of it wouldn’t budge that way. And its so dusty.. the bricks flake off. The bricks are crumbly and old. This house was built in 1895, its a corner rowhome.
Unfortunately there is no exact answer. You need to be wearing a respirator due to the presence of possible carcinogens and other nasties. Use dropclothes to protect other rooms, just do a small section at a time. You could use a small brick hammer (such as one made by Estwing) to loosen the material. All that you do with the brick hammer is tap tap tap, using the weight of the hammer as force and the fulcrum is your wrist. Then remove the chunks. Plus there is another thing: what do we do once the older plaster is down? What are we putting back up? Are we re-plastering or putting up drywall with insulation?
A tool that would remove the plaster is a floor scraper, but they are very tough. Once you start using that floor scraper the stuff is going to come off in buckets. So do we insulate and drywall after this?
