how can i re-do my old wooden bench?

I bought a beautiful chestnut-finish wood bench at a garage sale a few years ago.the bench was left outside and looks terrible.the wood is splitting its really dirty and the color is now sandy-ish.it also has some iron work(i think its iron) and its rusted a little. it has 4 beams going across where you sit but they have gotten very frail. when you sit down they bend down are thinning.is there any way i can fix this disaster? plz help also will it cost alot for a DIY project? help!

If the slats that go across (where you sit) are screwed down,you might be able to replace them with new wood.The iron work can be scrubbed with a wire brush and repainted using a rust-proof paint.It probably wouldn’t cost all that much,and you would have a good looking bench and a great feeling that you have re-used something that would have been thrown away.I have also re-cycled many old things into great stuff.Even if the slats are nailed or glued it probably wouldn’t be too hard to pry them up and replace them,what do you have to lose by trying anyway?
