How can I get old paint off cabinet door hinges?
I’m painting the vanity cabinet in the bathroom, rather than buying a new one, and it has painted hinges. Is there anything that I can soak the hinges in, to remove all the old paint and restore them to the original condition? I don’t want to buy new hinges because I like the design these have.
If the paint is oil based, soaking in paint thinner (also called mineral spirits) should work. Denatured alcohol works best to remove latex paint. If its still stuck, there’s a product called No Sand that will take any kind of paint off of anything. But, it’s so strong it’s liable to damage whatever the paint’s stuck to, so use carefully, and/or test an inconspicuous portion of your hinge.
I work in a paint store which my parents own. These are the chemicals we’ve used on similar projects to great effect.
