What you shouldn’t clean your car with?
I cleaned some stubborn marks off the paintwork using Ajax which is a bathroom cream cleanser, without thinking maybe I shouldn’t use that. It has left shiny spots on my car. This cleanser shouldn’t be used on anything except tiles because I’d used it on wood furniture where it also left a permanent shiny spot. Is there anything I can do now to fix it on my car, which is old so it doesn’t matter too much but still. The shiny spots are very obvious. Maybe I could use Ajax to clean the whole panel so they don’t stand out? Not sure if it is ruining the paint, which is already oxidising with age. I could spray lightly over the spots, as I have fixed up peeling paint in the past on my car with the proper paint…

over time dirt will actually get into the top layer of wax especially if you use car wash wax. sounds like you just made a few clean spots, there are other things made for painted surfaces, ajax is not one of them, If you want to make the rest of your car shiny I would suggest buying a product called nufinish.It comes in a flat looking orange bottle. it is in the car wax section of most stores, its inexpensive compared to some of the really good waxes like McGuire’s and some others, but I have used it before, and found it easy to use and it does great. I would just suggest you do just a small spot at a time, buy some car wash soap (do not use dish soap) you do not need wax in the soap. just wash and rinse the fender or door or whatever you used the ajax on, let it dry I use my old socks for cars, just rub a small area at a time, as you get through the layers on top of wax or car wash wax, it comes off black on your rag, when you get through the dirt on top, you will start to see, the color of your car on the rag (I have all white socks,) If you do not, use something white so you can see what is going on, you do not want to rub through the paint into the primer, once you get the crud off and a little color on the rag, move to a different spot in an ever widening pattern, also as the black builds up, you must rotate frequently to a clean spot, this is important. as the dirtier the rag gets the build up makes it harder to work with, but do small areas at a time, once it dries to a haze buff it good with like an old cotton tshirt, (don’t use anything that has those iron on pictures or any logos , just clean empty old t shirts. do a little at a time, and pretty soon it should all look shiny, step back a little and if you need to re wax a section just go over it, and when it hazes dry polish the heck out of it. The way the detailers get the super shine is to go back with a clean cloth tshirt and polish, polish polish until you think your arms will fall off, good luck
